CD Jewel Case Label Printing Tutorial

Several people have asked for a way to print CD jewel case labels with WebTv. I have put togeher this simple tutorial to help those interested get started. Below is a sample of how the format will look.

Instuctions

First of all if you don't have a free Homepage account get one. This will allow you to store your formatted covers so that you can re-print them without doing all the work over again. This will also give you a place to store all of your graphics that you might use on your labels.

Next thing is to always test print your labels on cheap paper first instead of card stock or expensive paper. That way your mistakes won't hurt as much.

If you are planning on PRINTING ON THE INSIDE of the front cover then continue reading this paragraph. If you are PRINTING ONLY ON THE OUTSIDE of the front cover then just cut and paste the codes as is,I would suggest that you paste only the codes for the front label first. That way you can print the outside first, then flip the paper over and then print the inside. If you are doing a large quantity of labels then paste the front cover code twice-leaving the block spacer code in between so that you can do two front covers at a time. Then paste the codes for the back cover on a separate page the same way, to allow printig two back covers at a time. You shouldn't attempt to print on the inside of the back cover because it will be covered by the plastic piece that holds the CD in place.

Now in the areas that I have the codes in red, you can type you text using all of the font codes. You can change the border size and or color but keep in mind that if you don't have a border you may have a difficult time cutting the labels to the correct size. You can also put in GIFs or JPEGs and make a background but a WARNINGIf your images or even text is too large it will change the size of the tables and mess everything up so don't get carried away !!!!

In the areas of the code in green you should only put in normal sized text. You can go smaller like-1 but if you go larger the above warning applies. At this time I have not figured out a way to type the text across the spine instead of from top to bottom. I also don't think that it is neccesary to put a <br> after each letter but you should put in a <P> in between the words to seperate them.

As far as what to print the labels on I feel that for the back cover regular paper will suffice. For the front cover however you may want to go with card stock, especially if you plan on printing on both sides and if people might remove it to read.. There are perforatted CD labels available but I have not tried them. They may be useful if you plan on doing a lot of covers because you don't have to cut them out. If you do use these you will almost certainly have to adjust the height of the block spacers to fit them. And again,print on paper first!!!
